Old City Jail Historic Charleston SCMagazine and Franklin Street Intersection
This present structure was built in 1790 as a jail and asylum. Though it was intended to hold around 128 prisoners, it is told that over 300 were frequently housed there. The Old City Jail was in operation from 1802 until 1939 and over 10,000 people died on the property, most of the building's original structures remain intact and ghost tours visit nightly during the summer months.
