Sienna
I dined here today with visitors to the area from Seattle, and when you can't decide which dish tastes best, you know you've found the right place. I can't begin to describe the spectrum of flavors from each and every dish served here. Ken Vedrinski, chef and owner, charms all who walk through the doors of this renowned establishment by welcoming diners who want to grab a quick, yummy bite, and also those who prefer to linger over a variety of dishes. He offers something for everyone.
It is true that Siena, Italy, is spelled with one n, but Sienna, the color, is spelled with two.The warmth and richness of the color Sienna perfectly represent the ambiance of this restaurant. And yes, it is Italian.
Wanting to explore the depth of this restaurant, we deferred to the chef to make our choices, and entertained one dish at a time shared among three, Italian family style; and this is the way to do it. From appetizer to dessert and even a selection of wine, every choice was perfect.
We started with the most phenomenal ravioli stuffed with sheep ricotta cheese and wild mushrooms with a hint of truffle, not on the menu. All this topped with a delectable wild mushroom sauce framed with tiny local sweet tomatoes, so scrumptious that we wiped the plate clean with Italian crustini. His grandmother's Wedding Soup can convert a non-soup eater to indulge! The calamarata pastas ideal firmness pleases the palate. Local triggerfish on a medley of fingerling potatoes, asparagus, and veggies infused with a white balsamic tangerine vinaigrette provide a perfect foil to a marriage of flavors complimented by the most ideal Insolia wine. Okay, we didn't stop here... on to dessert, also the chef's suggestions. And we were not disappointed by Caitlin Kelly, the pastry chef, whose abilities shone through with artistic presentation and a combination of flavors to please all.
THIS IS NOW MY NEW FAVORITE RESTAURANT! Don't miss out just because you think it is not conveniently located for you. It may require some effort to visit Daniel Island, but your efforts will be well-rewarded. Honestly, I can't believe there was an empty seat there; enjoy this unique hide-away before it becomes too popular to get into. (which I'm convinced will be soon) LOVE IT!
