Charleston City Marina Receives National Recognition as 2005 Marina of the Year Charleston, SC (January 2006 ) - Marina Dock Age Magazine, the marina industry's leading business publication, has named the Charleston City Marina 2005 Marina of the Year. This national award is bestowed upon one marina annually that excels in best management practices, exhibits strong growth and development, achieves high levels of customer satisfaction and service, is a strong environmental steward, and successfully markets and promotes the marina and related services to its customers.
As the marina and boatyard industry's premier business publication, Marina Dock Age Magazine is devoted to profiling maritime facilities, showcasing existing and new marina products, and highlighting best business practices. The Publisher, Janice Gordon, and Editorial Director, Jerome Koncel, will present the Marina of the Year Award at the 2006 International Marina & Boatyard Conference in Orlando, Florida (January 29 – February 1, 2006). Accepting will be the Charleston City Marina's Managing Partner, Robbie Freeman, General Manager, Nick McGinty, and Harbormaster, David Rogers.
In describing why the Charleston City Marina received this national award, Jerome Koncel praised the marina's vision and ability to succeed in the face of daunting challenges. "Through astute investments and dedication to its customers, the marina was transformed from a facility heavily damaged by Hurricane Hugo in 1989 into one of the East Coast's premier mega yacht destinations and South Carolina's busiest transient marina." Koncel added, "The Charleston City Marina has truly grown and developed into a world-class facility." The magazine's Awards Committee cited the 2003 addition of the MegaDock, a 1,530 foot long by 20 foot wide dock built especially for mega yacht transient boaters with high speed in-slip fueling, as a prime example of the marina's efforts to meet customers' needs.
Located in downtown Charleston, South Carolina, the Charleston City Marina was privatized in 1994 when the city leased the facility to a private operator, The City Marina Company. Since 1994, over $11 million in private sector dollars have been invested in the facility, which is now home to over 30 businesses and 180 full-time employees. "We have a healthy cluster of marine related businesses," explains Managing Partner, Robbie Freeman, "which is a major economic engine for recreational boating in our region and a good model for privatization."
Marina Dock Age was equally impressed with the Charleston City Marina's community involvement efforts. The marina donates dock space, time, and money to a variety of local charities that support South Carolina's boating community through water related programs. These include the Hollings Cancer Center's Dragon Boat Charleston, the Mosquito Fleet Program, the Reach Sailing Program, The College of Charleston Rowing Team, Interscholastic Sailing for high school students, and the Medical University of South Carolina's Anchors Away Program, which specializes in adaptive water sports for people with disabilities. Proceeds from the Charleston City Marina's annual HMY-Viking MegaDock Billfishing Tournament are also contributed to various marine related organizations.
