The bridge is less than 500 yards long, but it's been eight years in the making and has opened up 33 upper-end home sites on the Wando River in Park West.
Contractors recently completed the 1,440-foot expanse to Park Island, which will have large home sites starting at $799,000. To celebrate what it calls "the capstone of Park West," developers will hold a grand opening 5-7 p.m. May 24 to show off Park Island, said Jennifer Peak, marketing director
The event will feature trolley rides from the Park West activity center with a guided tour to the island, entertainment and refreshments.
Park Island residents can use the Park West attractions, including the clubhouse, swimming and tennis club, playgrounds, biking and jogging trails, shops, offices and a child-care center.
Plans for the bridge to Park Island date to 1998, when a developer sought access to the land mass in the Wando River. An ensuing lawsuit went to the state Supreme Court in 2005, when the high court threw out the old rules that governed about 2,400 undeveloped marsh islands in South Carolina.
A legislative agreement last year cleared the way to limit the number of bridges to 220 including the road to Park Island. "This is a very special offering," said Kirby Baker, sales manager for Park West Realty.
