West Ashley is one of Charleston's oldest suburban residential areas. This area is comprised of older neighborhoods, green with foliage and larger homes set back on wooded and waterfront lots. Here is the convenience of living only five minutes from downtown Charleston with the feeling of living in the country.

U.S. Highway 61 corridor cuts through West Ashley to national historic landmarks such as Magnolia Plantation and Audubon Swamp Gardens. Middleton Place Plantation is famed for its terraced colonial gardens and living history events and Drayton Hall National Trust Historic Site retains one of America’s finest examples of Georgian-Palladian architecture.

Although there are numerous small neighborhoods that are becoming more sought-after, such as Byrnes Down and Avondale, there are also those with larger estate homes.



Nestled between 17, Porter Gaud private school, and Wappoo Creek,this neighborhood has well-defined borders and is certainly the star of this side of Charleston when it comes to lovely private homes on large wooded lots. Walk to the nearby shopping center of South Windermere across the street for your cup of Starbucks, your office supplies, or wholesome food at the market. A small theatre is also located in this nearby area, so need to drive at all. The streets here are quiet with entrances insuring that there is no thru traffic.


This area was established in the late 1920's and therefore has mature trees on estate sized lots with spacious homes. Because of the location desirability with an established neighborhood with large homes, many people pay top dollar to buy a property to then completely rehabilitate the home. Students who live in the Crescent can walk to Porter-Gaud School (a private school), or attend the public schools for this neighborhood of St. Andrews Elementary, West Ashley Middle and West Ashley High School.

A small private neighborhood bordering the Ashley River just over the Ashley River Bridge, neighbors appreciate the quiet of these streets. Homes are smaller than those found in the Crescent even after renovations.

Part of South Windermere consists of waterfront or marshfront properties, and these homes are larger and more expensive. Most of the homes in South Windermere are one story ranch style houses that were originally built in the 50's with many of the original owners still enjoying this comfortable neighborhood.

The South Windermere shopping area includes a Starbucks, Earth Fare, Staples, Urbana Nirvana among boutique bakeries and stationery shops. There is a wide variety of price points in South Windermere & Windermere making the neighborhood very diverse and desireable.

Public schools for this neighborhood are St. Andrews Elementary, West Ashley Middle and West Ashley High School.

Wappoo Heights is made up of a few streets just off Folly Road situated next to South Windermere Shopping Center. The neighborhood consists of large homes with renovations occurring throughout the area.  The prices in Wappoo Heights are slightly less than the homes across Folly Road in the Crescent, but the address is still prestigious.

The public schools for this neighborhood are St. Andrews Elementary, West Ashley Middle and West Ashley High School.

Byrnes Down is situated just off Savannah Highway just a half mile from the Ashley River Bridge in close proximity to Downtown Charleston, shopping, schools and hospitals. Homes here are from the 50's with many small brick homes on average sized lots. These "starter homes" are occupied by young families as well as retired couples, and has become more desireable recently because of the cute homes in a friendly environment. The prices have always been a bit higher per square foot here because of location and convenience.

Go down the road another half mile and turn right to find Avondale, another popular neighborhood for young couples who enjoy renovating these older brick homes which still have lots of character and usually lovely hardwood floors.

Battery Haig has some wonderful homes with fabulous views of the marsh. A bit of a drive from 17 (near Costco and 526) out to the marsh through some ordinary neighborhoods, but well worth the trip for the view alone.
